Description

Single-family house for sale, under construction, 120 sq.m. in the area "Avia, Megali Mantineia" on a plot of 4500 sq.m.

Megali Mantineia is a semi-mountainous settlement of the municipal division of Avia of the former Municipality of Avia, now the Municipality of West Mani, of the Prefecture of Messinia. It is located at an altitude of 200 m and during the 2001 census its population reached 180 inhabitants. The settlement's economy is based on olive oil production and tourism.

History

It is mentioned for the first time in 1463 Ano Mantineia or Ano Chora, in contrast to the older coastal Mantineia. Until the middle of the 19th century there was an important settlement in the area of Zarnata. In 1704 it had 59 families (about 277 people). At the end of the 18th century, a smaller settlement, Mikri Mantineia, was created in the nearby area, as a result of which the older Ano Mantineia was renamed to Megali Mantineia.
In 1835 the village joined the Municipality of Avia. From the middle of the 19th century, a part of the population began to move to the coastal areas, creating the settlements of Paliochora (present-day Avia), Archontiko and Akrogiali. However, Greater Mantineia continued to retain a significant portion of its population. It had 413 km in 1851, 469 km in 1879 and 424 km in 1907. In 1914 it was the seat of the community of Megali Mantineia, which included the new settlements. However, in 1924 the seat was moved to the coastal Paliochora, which in 1926 was renamed "Avia" and the community to Avias community.
After the 2nd world war most of the old inhabitants moved to the coastal settlements or migrated to other areas. Residents from mountain villages of Taygetos, mainly from Altomira, Pigadia and Gaitses, gradually settled in Megali Mantineia. They constitute its current population. After 1980, several Europeans, mainly English and German, have settled, buying and restoring the old tower houses.
In the village there is a cultural club with a remarkable activity. There are small tourist units, rooms for rent and village taverns.
